David Hickman’s On the Wind at Library Grand Opening
Artist discusses the kinetic sculpture he designed for the Timberglen Branch Library
|
Hickman’s graceful stainless steel sculpture presents two canopies that are activated by the wind to rotate around a curved post. On the Wind’s canopies feature two symbols of knowledge: books and compact discs. The books represent traditional printed materials, while the discs suggest the digital age. As the books and discs revolve around one another, the merging of both the old and new forms of information present methods to educate ourselves and enrich our understanding of the world around us. On the Wind offers two messages to library patrons: “Read, Learn, Apply” and “Think: Conserve Resources. The messages are displayed on each of the books in bold letters. Located at the entrance of the Timberglen Branch Library, On the Wind greets visitors with a flowing gesture, as its canopies move and reveal the sculpture’s message.
Hickman was selected by a competitive process and commissioned by the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs Public Art Program. He has completed more than 30 private and public art commissions, including projects for the Dallas Executive Airport, the City of Dallas’ Northwest Highway Service Center, and the Parkland Foundation’s new Simmons Ambulatory Surgery Center at Parkland Hospital. The Texas Commission on the Arts honored Hickman as the Texas State Artist in the three-dimensional category for 2004. Hickman was also recognized by the Dallas Chapter of American Institute of Architects as 2005 Artist Of The Year.
