September 11, 2007, Lampasas, Tex. - Painting is in Jack Terry’s blood. Ranching is in his blood. When he combined the two to become one of the most exciting western artists working today, he was home.
On Saturday, October 6, Lampasans will get the chance to meet Jack Terry at Fourth Street Gallery on Lampasas County Courthouse Square. There, at 7 pm, Terry will be in residence and will talk about his art. His work will be there too – three oil paintings, several prints, and giclees will be on view for visitors to admire at the gallery through October 31.
Terry got his first taste of the painting life from his grandmother on his father’s side. She painted Texas – the people and places that make the state special. She taught him to draw and paint, and it was not long before he was winning awards at county fairs. His grandfather on the other side of the family introduced him to ranching. The stories of his rides on the great cattle drives and his work as a cowboy and rancher captured Terry’s imagination. These tales fired the young artist’s desire to paint these subjects and to work a ranch himself.
Now Jack and his wife, Mary, live in Georgetown, Texas, and own a 250-acre ranch just north of there. At the ranch, they raise cattle, horses, and exotic deer. This ranch affords spectacular views which Terry exploits in his western paintings. And, his work as a rancher informs his subjects. When you look at a Jack Terry painting, you feel a Jack Terry painting. That’s because it’s not just an observation – it’s something Jack Terry knows, it’s something Jack Terry’s lived.
